November 25, 2020 — Qatar Airways, the national carrier of Qatar, will increase the number of weekly flights on the Doha – Zagreb route in December. In addition to weekly Friday flights, the airline is adding a flight on Wednesdays.
Qatar Airways currently operates on the Doha – Zagreb route only once a week, every Friday, with A320 planes. Overall, there are currently far fewer weekly flights as a direct result of weak demand caused by the global pandemic.
Last summer, Qatar Airways flew this route as many as 14 times a week according to Croatian Aviation. This summer they also planned to launch a route to Dubrovnik.
However, Qatar Airways cut off traffic to Zagreb completely during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. Then, the company resumed flights route on July 1 for three weeks. Due to low demand, they suspended flights for two weeks during summer — in August and September. Presently, Qatar offers one flight a week to Zagreb.
Qatar Offers Extra Wednesday Flights in December
In December the airline will briefly increase the number of weekly flights on Zagreb route. In addition to the Friday flight on Friday, Qatar will offer flights on Wednesdays. A320 aircraft, with a capacity of 132 seats, will service both weekly flights — 12 in business and 120 in economy class. For both weeks, the flight will operate on same schedule, with an afternoon departure from Zagreb.
- Doha – Zagreb 07:45 – 11:45
- Zagreb – Doha 15:35 – 23:00
The temporary increase of Qatar Airways flights during the Christmas and New Year holidays definitely makes sense for the company. Many Croatian citizens would to travel to Croatia during this time. Many Slovenian citizens also fly this route
What Qatar Airways will do with Zagreb route in January and February remains in question. However, during the “traditionally” bad months demand has been relatively low, even under normal circumstances. The company had planned to connect the Zagreb with Vienna, but that did not happen.
Certainly if the emerging markets, primarily from Asia, see activity during summer 2021, Qatar Airways will respond by increasing weekly flight frequencies on this route. Therefore, a minimum of four flights a week is not out of the question. In addition, it is important to consider that Emirates will not fly to Zagreb next summer, nor is it likely that Korean Air will offer flights either.
