Anesthesiologist from Dubrava: We Have Never Had Such a High Mortality Rate
“I’ve been in this profession for 10 years and in those 10 years I haven’t had as many people die as in these 3 months. We’ve never had such a mortality rate and in the beginning it was terribly frustrating, but then I read the literature and realized it was such a disease,” said Anesthesiologist Dr. Andrej Sribar on N1 on Wednesday.
“The biggest misunderstanding is that these are people who have significant comorbidities, yes, there are such people, but we may have taken 3 years of someone’s life because of irresponsible behavior. Now there are younger people in intensive care and the consequences are yet to be seen,” he added.
Croatia Has Become the New Italy: President of Croatian Medical Chamber
President of the Croatian Medical Chamber Dr. Sc. Krešimir Luetić said on Studio 4 that the Varaždin hospital is in a difficult situation and that about 200 COVID-19 patients have been hospitalized there. He emphasized that patients are beginning to be hospitalized in temporary facilities (in tents).
He added that Varaždin, Međimurje and Krapina-Zagorje counties are among the most endangered counties, including their hospitals. He pointed out that the City of Zagreb is also in an increasingly difficult epidemiological position and is afraid that Croatia is moving in a negative direction regarding the epidemic.
Dr. Željko Blažinkov from the Croatian Association of Hospital Doctors said that the situation in hospitals was alarming and that the intensive care units were full and the number of respirators was limited. He added that the association had warned in an open letter that the situation in hospitals was much worse than it was presented to the public and that the influx of patients was huge.
This is a State of War: 70 Percent of Patients on Ventilators are Dying in Varaždin
Head of the Department of Anesthesiology, Resuscitation and Intensive Care Renata Krobot, said they currently have 16 patients in the intensive care unit of whom 14 are on ventilators. “The first patient was admitted to our facility on a ventilator on October 17. So far, 64 have been hospitalized. The mortality rate is 77 percent. The average age of the dead is 67 years,” Krobot said on Wednesday.
New Measures May Include Closing Restaurants, Cafes, Cinemas Until Christmas
Unofficial reports (source: Index) indicate that cafes and restaurants will close (restaurant food delivery OK). Hotels may stay open and hotel restaurants would be available only for guests. Shops would remain open, but there would be restrictions on number of people inside at one time. Cinemas would close, while salons and shopping centers would stay open. Epidemiologists are seeking closure of gyms, but that is uncertain, and gyms are mostly empty now.
Elementary schools would not switch to online classes, but high schools and colleges would partially transition to online teaching (many are already). An official announcement is expected on Thursday. These measures, once approved, would go into effect Saturday and remain in effect until Christmas Eve.
National Headquarters Preparing Even Stricter Nationwide Measures on Wednesday
Minister of the Interior and head of the National Civil Protection Headquarters Davor Bozinovic announced on Tuesday that the National Headquarters would prepare a stricter set of measures against the COVID-19 epidemic by Wednesday, which will take effect at the end of the week and be valid until Christmas.
“These are tougher measures, some think that these (current) measures are enough, but the numbers are not falling and we will implement new measures bearing in mind that this is a long battle,” revealed Bozinovic after a Government meeting with prefects. They wanted an assessment of the situation and to hear about plans for the upcoming days. “The draft measure will be prepared for the cabinet of the Government. Then, will be given to prefects for their reactions. After that, we will make a decision which will probably take effect by the end of the week,” he announced.
He said that everything should be done, when the COVID-19 vaccine arrives in Croatia, to vaccinate as many citizens as possible. Because in order to stop the epidemic, it is necessary to vaccinate 70 percent of the adult population. “According to the Law on the Protection of the Population from Infectious Diseases, there are mandatory vaccines. In order for the vaccine to stop the epidemic, 70 percent of the population must be vaccinated. We will make sure that this happens,” he indicated.

Sasa Srica Believes That Lockdown Will Remain the Only Option
“I don’t think these measures were adopted with bad intentions, but they were adopted too late. These are measures of a cosmetic nature, they will not be able to stop these figures,” revealed Pulmonologist Saša Srića, who works at the COVID-19 hospital in Dubrava. He was a guest on N1 television on Monday.
“There is a larger influx of patients who come than those who leave. We are doing everything we can. Patients who are admitted because of COVID-19 cannot be discharged before the tenth day. Many patients develop various complications, the clinical picture is quite bizarre,” added Srica.
“With due respect to Minister Beroš’ efforts, I cannot agree that the health system is not endangered. It is in an definitely alarming, if not critical phase,” said Srica, adding that Ivan Djikic should have been included in the Government’s Scientific Council.
