November 24, 2020 — The Greek national airline, Aegean Airlines, has announced its return to Croatian airports in summer 2021! They will offer flights to Zagreb, Split and Dubrovnik.
Aegean Airlines did not offer flights to any Croatian airports this year. Before the COVID-19 outbreak, the airline planned to fly to Zagreb, Split and Dubrovnik, according to Croatian Aviation. However, they canceled all flights in April 2020.
Then the company discontinued all routes to Croatia for summer 2021 as well. Therefore, at one point the return of Aegean Airlines to Croatian airports was questionable. That worst-case scenario, nevertheless, will not happen. The Greek airline is once again offering three flights from Athens — to Dubrovnik, Split and Zagreb.
Aegean Offers 22 Weeks of Flights to Croatia With Higher Capacity Aircraft
For the peak of the 2021 summer season, Aegean Airlines has announced 22 weeks of flights to and from Croatia! On all of these routes, Aegean Airlines will be using A320 planes. These aircraft offer greater capacity compared to summer 2019, when the airline used DashQ400 aircraft for some flights.
Aegean Airlines began offering the Athens – Zagreb route in May 2018, using DashQ400 aircraft three times a week. Although the airline only planned to offer the route for summer, the company continued the route during winter. They offered two flights a week, except in January and February, when the airline briefly interrupted them due to low demand. In summer 2019, this route operated four times a week, which was the plan for the summer 2020, but with larger A320 aircraft.
Aegean Airlines has released tickets on this route for summer of next year. This route will begin operating on March 31, 2021 and flights are available until October 30, 2021.
Greek Airline to Offer Zagreb – Athens Flights Wednesdays, Saturdays
On the route between Zagreb and Athens, there will be two flights a week, every Wednesday and Saturday, on A319 aircraft, which have a significantly higher capacity than the DashQ400 (144 versus 78 seats).
In summer 2021, Aegean Airlines will offer up to 17,856 seats between Athens and Zagreb! The seat capacity will be significantly higher than 2019 due to the change in aircraft. And while the airline has reduced number of weekly flights, the total number of available seats connecting the two capitals will be only slightly less.
- Departures from Athens in the morning, arriving Zagreb at 9:05 CET.
- Departures from Zagreb to Athens are at 9:50 CET.
Aegean launched flights to Split in summer 2016 and has been systematically increasing its capacity ever since, by mostly increasing the number of weekly flights. For example, in summer 2018, the airline offered four flights a week. However, in summer 2019, they added a fifth flight. DashQ400 aircraft serviced this route.
Athens – Split Flights Four Times a Week Beginning May 18, 2021
For summer 2021, Aegean Airlines has announced four flights a week on the Athens – Split route. This route will operate from May 18, 2021 to October 7, 2021. A319 aircraft, which have a 144 passenger capacity, will service this route.
Aegean will connect Split and Athens by direct flights on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. On Mondays and Fridays the airline will offer afternoon flights. On Tuesdays and Thursdays they will fly mornings.
Given the change in aircraft on this route, and significantly higher passenger capacity on flights to and from Split Airport, Aegean Airlines will have almost 24,000 seats available summer 2021!
Aegean introduced the Dubrovnik route in summer 2015, and continuously increased the number of weekly flights every season, following the same pattern as the Split route. During the peak of summer 2019, the route operated 5 times a week, with A320 and DashQ400 aircraft.
Aegean Restarts Athens – Dubrovnik Flights on March 29, 2021
The Greek airline plans to restart this route as early as March 29, 2021 — beginning with two flights a week on Mondays and Saturdays. From May 20, 2021 — they plan to add third flight on Thursdays. In addition, from June 4, 2021 — Aegean will add flights on Fridays and Sundays.
Therefore, Aegean is increasing its capacity for Dubrovnik flights, considering that they will be using A319 and A320 aircraft. In comparison, they also used the smaller DashQ400 in summer 2019 on this route.
However, the airline plans to reduce postseason flights to Dubrovnik. Namely, from September 30, 2021 to October 30, 2021 flights will be available on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays.
It is too early to draw conclusions about whether Aegean will operate to Zagreb (potentially Dubrovnik) next winter. Nevertheless, the potential for a route to Zagreb exists, especially if the airline industry returns to normal next winter. As Croatian Aviation learned, Aegean will monitor bookings on all routes. If necessary, they will respond to demand by increasing weekly flights next summer. And Zagreb may have the best chance for another flight per week.
Popular Destinations in Greece Available for Croatian Tourists in Summer 2021
In addition to the direct rout to Athens, Aegean offers flights to an array of destinations throughout Greece. An increasing number of Croatian citizens spend their summer holidays in Greece. Therefore, destinations like Heraklion, Chania, Santorini, Karpathos, Rhodes, Kos and others should be available again next summer!
