ZAGREB, November 6, 2020 — Lufthansa has shut down the Munich – Zagreb route effective December 1! With the cancellation of this route, the company will temporarily leave Zagreb Airport. Note that the German airline already cancelled the Frankfurt – Zagreb route until Spring 2021.
Lufthansa launched the Munich – Zagreb route shortly after the COVID-19 lockdown, and initially operated it three times a week. Then they gradually increased the number of weekly flights between the two cities. Croatian Aviation points out that, during the lockdown, Lufthansa shut down the Frankfurt – Zagreb route. Then, the company announced that flights would resume March 2021.
Cologne Based Airline Enjoyed 17.45 Percent Traffic at Zagreb Airport
The figures confirm how important Lufthansa is as a partner of Zagreb Airport. In 2016, the company had a up to 18.25% share in passenger traffic. In 2017, Cologne-based airline enjoyed a 17.45% share.
Lufthansa was expected to run the Munich – Zagreb route (the only active route to Croatia!) for the entire winter season. The number of flights even increased for November with available flights. However, effective December 1, the company will suspend traffic on this route. By doing so, it will completely, and temporarily, withdraw from the Zagreb Airport, and consequently the Croatian market.
Since Lufthansa is halting traffic on their only active route to Zagreb, Eurowings is the only member of the Lufthansa group servicing Croatian capital this winter. Austrian Airlines already cancelled flights to Croatia in October.
After 53 years, Lufthansa Temporarily Withdraws from Croatia
From Wednesday, December 16, Croatia Airlines will offer daily flights on the Zagreb – Munich route. The success of that route will primarily depend on booking. After the withdrawal of Lufthansa, that could be satisfactory, especially during the Christmas and New Year holidays.
The withdrawal of Lufthansa from Zagreb is certainly bad news – because there is no longer a direct connection to Munich. As a hub, the German city enables travel to numerous destinations in Europe and the world.
