COVID-19 News in Past 48 Hours
- Croatia Health Minister Vili Beros said at today’s (Monday) press conference: “Unlike in the spring, we will do our best to avoid a health lockdown and provide care to everyone, not just covid-positive patients,” said the minister after a meeting with hospital directors about the strategy and schedule of hospital capacities convened due to the increased number of coronavirus infected.” He is convinced that Croatia also has a sufficient number of hospital beds “for maximum scenarios”. At the moment, the hospital system has more than 20,000 beds and the number of beds for acute patients is 14,460. “What may limit the provision of health care will be the relative shortage of health workers. Those who have survived COVID-19 will be the basis for providing health care because they are protected by their antibodies, and there are more than 1,200 of them at the moment,” he added.
- HZJZ epidemiologist Goranka Petrović said in HRT’s show U mreže prvo that by the end of the week, the number of newly infected in Croatia could be around 2,000 a day. Petrovic said that the number of newly infected people is expected to increase this week as well, but she hopes that the consistent application of the measures that have been adopted, as well as those that are yet to come, will stop the further increase.
- All members of the Capuchin community of the monastery of the Holy Trinity in Varaždin, after several confirmed cases of COVID-19 infection, are in self-isolation and all regular pastoral activities are suspended. In case of emergencies and needs, worshipers are to contact the parish office by phone. According to the most recent information, almost all the friars are infected.
- The head nurse of the Obstetrics Department of KBC Sisters of Mercy (KBC Sestre milosrdnice), Blaženka Sumpor, in an interview for HRT Dnevnik, appealed to pregnant women to wear masks. Several employees of the ward are infected, of which three are doctors and two are midwives, and seven doctors and ten midwives are in self-isolation.
- Two pregnant women and three mothers of the Clinic for Women’s Diseases and Obstetrics Department of KBC Sisters of Mercy (KBC Sestre milosrdnice) are positive for COVID-19, the clinic is closed until the disinfection is carried out and the patients are temporarily assigned to other departments, confirmed the head of the clinic Krunoslav Kuna. The ward is temporarily closed and does not accept patients, and is expected to reopen in two to three days.
- Scientist and molecular biologist Igor Štagljar was a guest on N1 Television and commented on the epidemiological situation in Croatia. Stagljar says the situation is not alarming, but it is worrying. “The transmission of the virus is spreading, that’s obvious. By the end of next week, there could be 2,000 cases,” Stagljar said. “Citizens of Croatia do not understand how well the epidemiological team along with the government handled this virus at the very beginning. The mortality rate is about 1.6 percent. When I compare it with Canada, Croatia has better resolved the situation. Therefore, citizens feel it is a a harmless disease, and that the danger is being overplayed. And it really isn’t,” Stagljar said.
Croatia National Headquarters New Safety Measures
- Interior Minister and Chief of the National Civil Protection Headquarters Davor Božinović announced on Monday that wearing masks indoors would be obligatory and social gatherings attended by more than 50 people would be restricted. “We are introducing the obligation to wear masks indoors, where people come into contact with each other, and it is not possible to maintain a physical distance of at least two meters,” Božinović said at a noon press conference of the National Civil Protection Headquarters.
- “Citizens are obliged to use face masks or medical masks in the correct way all the time – over the mouth and nose,” he added.
- Masks must be worn by employees of healthcare institutions and people visiting patients, employees of social welfare institutions providing accommodation services and visitors to users, drivers and other employees in public transport and passengers in public transport. They should also be worn by employees and customers in stores, employees in the catering industry who come into contact with guests or participate in serving or preparing food, drinks and beverages, guests in catering establishments, except while sitting in their seats and consume food, drinks or beverages, etc.
- Božinović said that special recommendations have been made for all gatherings where more than 50 people are expected, and they relate to professional artistic performances and programs, amateur cultural and artistic performances and programs, cinema screenings, sports competitions, gatherings during weddings, funerals, the last farewell and laying of urns, religious rites, exhibitions in museums, galleries and other exhibition spaces.
