ZAGREB, October 3, 2020 (Hina) – The Embassy of the People’s Republic of China on Friday stated that US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo’s warning against Croatia-China cooperation were his attempts to vilify the Communist Party of China and smear China for no reason.
“We noticed that US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo continues to spread a ‘political virus’ during his visit to Croatia,” the embassy said. Earlier in the day, the Secretary of State said that Croatia should not hand over strategic projects to the Chinese. He added that the US Administration is concerned about the spread of China’s influence. He also expressed concern about Huawei’s participation in building 5G networks worldwide, claiming that the Chinese telecommunications giant would hand over information to Beijing.
The Chinese embassy responded that Pompeo “maliciously vilified the Communist Party of China, attacked and smeared China for no reason, and attempted to sabotage China-Croatia relations. The Chinese side firmly opposes this.”
The statement reads that China urges “some US politicians to do away with their arrogance and bias towards China. They should also stop instigating the flesh and blood ties between the Communist Party of China and the Chinese people. Their attempts are wishful thinking and doomed to fail,” the embassy says in response to Pompeo’s statement.
Chinese Embassy: US Recklessly Slanders China Without Evidence
“The US recklessly slanders China and Chinese companies without any evidence. Its real purpose is not to protect privacy or maintain cyber security, but to serve its own political purpose. That includes consolidating their own digital hegemony and depriving other countries of the right to development,” the statement continued.
“We will firmly support the right of relevant companies to safeguard their legitimate rights and interests. We will continue to firmly safeguard international trade rules,” the embassy added in response to Pompeo’s comments.
“China always insists on developing friendship and cooperation with countries based upon mutual respect, mutual benefit and win-win results. We are willing to continue to work with all countries to maintain a fair, just, open and non-discriminatory business environment. In addition, we will ensure that safe, reliable and quality information technology will boost the global economic recovery. It will also help improve people’s lives around the world.”
The Chinese side also believes “that the international community has a clear understanding of the political tricks of a small group of American politicians. They will not blindly dance with the US.”
“We also hope that the US will return to the right track of openness and cooperation,” the statement concludes.
Huawei Responds to Pompeo Comments About 5G
Prompted by Pompeo’s statements made during his tour where he visited Greece, Italy, the Vatican and Croatia, the Chinese company Huawei also responded on Friday. They dismissed as unfounded American claims that their company was putting cyber security at risk. They also hope that the Croatian government would not discriminate against them when building their 5G network.
Pompeo said, among other things, that when people cooperate with Chinese companies, they become deeply connected to the security apparatus. Therefore, information could reach places where no Croatian citizen would want it to go.
“If you have a secure network and IT system, then private data and information can be safe. If you have a (Chinese) company that is not transparent and invests in a predatory way, they can use information in a way which no Croatian citizen should suffer,” Pompeo explained.
Croatia has increased cooperation with China in recent years. China Road and Bridge Corporation, a Chinese company, is building the biggest infrastructure project in Croatia — the Pelješac Bridge.
