Croatia COVID-19 Weekly Report
The Croatian Institute of Public Health has published a weekly report on COVID-19, which contains data from last week.
The Split-Dalmatia County had the most infections with 672 new cases. It was followed by the City of Zagreb with 404 new cases of COVID-19, and the third is Zadar County, which confirmed 114 new cases last week.
In the past week, 1948 people became infected, and 189 of them were hospitalized. The average age of patients is 40.6 years. The confirmed case rate per 100,000 population is 47.6. During the last week, 13 people died, of which six were on ventilators.
Continental Croatia – Holidays and Vacations Sources of Infections
In the last week, new cases were recorded in every county of continental Croatia, most in the City of Zagreb, Brod-Posavina and Zagreb counties, while the highest 7-day rates (on August 31) were in Požega-Slavonia County, Brod-Posavina and the City of Zagreb. In most counties, the patients’ source of infection is associated with vacations and going to clubs on the Adriatic. New hotspots were confirmed at wedding celebrations in Požega-Slavonia County and Virovitica-Podravina County. The disease has also spread to a home for the elderly in Požega-Slavonia County. A significant part of the cases are contacts of COVID-19 patients or the cases were imported from Bosnia and Herzegovina. Given that source of infection is known in most cases, the epidemiological situation is under control.
Coastal Croatia – Most New Patients Infected During Nights Out
The highest number of patients and the highest 7-day rates during the last week were recorded in the Split-Dalmatia County, Šibenik-Knin County and Zadar County. In the Split-Dalmatia County, hotspots were confirmed in the health care system, institutions for accommodation within the social welfare system and at one preschool institution. Nevertheless, most patients are young people whose illness is associated with night outs. In other coastal counties, hotspots were recorded at weddings in Primorje-Gorski Kotar County and gatherings of retirees in Zadar County. As in the continental part of the country, there is a significant number of patients who are contacts of known cases.
Most New Cases Between 19 and 30 Years Old
In the previous week, a total of 1941 people were infected – approximately the same number of men, 974, or 50.18%, and women 967, or 49.82%. The same distribution by sex is present in most age groups, except in the age group of 7-10 years (lower grades of primary school) where there is a higher proportion of infected boys (12 boys, or 70.6%) and in the age group 15-18 years. (secondary school age) where the share of girls is higher (51 girls, or 63.8%) and the age group 66 and older (retirees), where the share of women is higher (130 persons, or 55.6%).
By age groups – 161 children became infected and they make up the smallest share (8.3%) in the number of new patients in the past week. The least affected were children younger than 12 months old, a total of 4, and children in the lower grades of primary school, a total of 17, each of whom make up less than 1% of the new patients. The highest number of infected children are of high school age, 80 in total, or 4.1%. Almost a third of patients (538 and 27.7%) in the last week are young adults, aged 19 to 30, which fits into the epidemiological situation where there is a significant number of new patients associated with vacations and outings because people from this age group go out most often during the vacation season.
In general, adults make up the largest share in the total number of patients last week. The age group of 19 to 30 years (1546 or 79.6%) is followed by the age group of 31 to 40 (367 or 18.9%) and the age group of 51 to 65 years (361 or 18.6%). The lowest number of new patients is in the age group 41-50 years (280 or 14.4%). The number of people older than 66, and the most vulnerable, reached 234 or 12.1%.
362 Tourist Infections in Croatia
As for the infection among tourists, according to the table showing the period from July 7 to August 28, there were 362 total. Of these, 122 of them stayed in several places. Viewed individually, the largest number of infected tourists is in Makarska – 70, followed by Split with 50 and Novalja with 36.
Most newly infected are Austrian tourists with 145, followed by the United Kingdom with 115 and Slovenia with 52 cases.
