Capak for RTL: ‘All measures are on the table, from masks, fewer people at gatherings’
18:15 – For the third day in a row, a record number of newly infected, and most are young. In Split-Dalmatia County there are more than a hundred, while in Istria there are 11 times less.
The director of the Croatian Institute of Public Health, Krunoslav Capak, spoke to RTL Danas about whether Croatia is about to introduce new measures and how the Headquarters intends to put out the COVID-19 blaze.
“Split Dalmatia County currently has the highest incidence of new COVID-19 infections in Croatia. One of the main topics we want to discuss at that meeting with the county headquarters is to exchange information on the current situation. All options are open, from wearing masks to reducing the number of people at gatherings etc.
Is it possible that only Split-Dalmatia County will be ordered to wear masks and not elsewhere?
“It’s possible, but we’re talking about it hypothetically, I’m not saying that will happen. There are other counties which have a high incidence of infection. We’ll ask them to share their biggest problem and what could done to help them to reduce their numbers,” replied Capak.
Should nightclubs have been opened at all?
“It’s easy to be a general after the battle. I will remind our citizens that in addition to epidemiological measures for clubs, we also made it possible for certain cultural events to take place. We wanted to do this to help the music industry survive, to survive this difficult situation with COVID-19. If you close a venue completely young people will find another way, another place, to gather and that is what is happening now. We closed clubs after midnight and now we have a situation where they are gathering in squares and street parks. We have always been against repression. We are not a police state or a military state. We believe that it is best for us to warn, appeal, educate, and not to repress.
Did the tourists bring or take COVID-19 back with them?
“Some brought it here. I will remind you of the beginning of the tourist season, we had infected tourists at the beginning of July: from Serbia, Macedonia, and Sweden. We have reports through the EU ‘Early Warning and Response’ system that people are coming from Croatia every day, and that they are tested positive. It is difficult to say which scenario happened more. “
Considering the total number of tested in Croatia, 16 percent are positive. How many are asymptomatic?
“I think that number is a bit smaller. We have a system for collecting epidemiological data, which was put together a little later, there is a lot more data inside which is important for epidemiological processing. According to our reports that base is somewhere around 20 percent. The last time we saw it was about 10 days ago, now the percentage could be a bit higher.”
Will the school year begin on September 7?
“We always say, everything will depend on the epidemiological situation. We will be ready for all scenarios. It could be at the local level If there is a problem in a county, it does not mean that somewhere where they have zero infected schools they would not start on time. We are currently counting on school to start on September 7 and will see what the epidemiological situation will be like then.”

“We are in a serious phase. The virus is spreading and this is a very dangerous situation. We did not prepare well, we needed to have more testing and require tourists to get tested. People greet each other, make close contacts, as if they have forgotten that there is an epidemic going on,” he told Jutarnji list.
8:10 – Member of the Scientific Council of Croatia, prof. dr. sc. Gordan Lauc said on Dobro jutro, Hrvatska that he thinks that the situation is not that bad because we have gained several new insights in the last few weeks.
Split-Dalmatia County is the Biggest Focus
Yesterday, Split-Dalmatia County, which is currently the biggest hot spot, had the worst numbers. The head of the local headquarters, Luka Brčić, said that this was the result of the tourist season, which had positive and negative consequences.
Lauc believes that the country opening, because of the season, brought in more infected people. He also cited the economic recovery because the tourist season was better than expected.
Croatia Added to Country Red Lists
Due to the increased number of infected people, Slovenia and Great Britain put Croatia on the red list yesterday. This means that passengers from Croatia coming to the UK will have to isolate themselves for 14 days, the British Minister of Transport announced on Thursday.
Jelko Kacin, the spokesman of the Slovenian government for COVID-19, explained that Slovenian citizens currently in Croatia must return to Slovenia no later than midnight Monday so that they do not have to go into 14-day quarantine.
Those who enter Croatia after Friday will have to undergo a 14-day quarantine, regardless of their age or the area in Croatia where they are staying.
The Slovenian government announced this week that the deadline for tourists in Croatia returning without quarantine would expire at the end of the week. They explained that the deadline had been extended to give more time to those returning and minimize lines at the border. However, Interior Minister Aleš Hojs urged Slovenes not to wait until Monday or the last minute to return to the country.
Germany has issued a travel warning for Šibenik-Knin and Split-Dalmatia counties due to the increased number of new COVID-19 infections.
People returning from Germany from these counties must undergo a COVID-19 test upon return. They must remain in self-isolation upon return pending test results. Austria implemented a similar decision, but it applies for all of Croatia.
