10:12 – “Today the number (of confirmed COVID-19 infections) will be slightly lower, less than 100, as less were tested over the weekend. We will see the numbers tomorrow. We anticipate that the numbers will jump due to the large number of tourists.”
In Sweden, the system is a little different. We have some restrictions, but in Sweden everything was relaxed. Restaurants, cafes, schools functioned normally … and we have a new normal, but we have some restrictions. I urge everyone to adhere to the measures,” Capak said.
About requirements to wear masks?
“We have made it a requirement to wear masks in some areas. People on streets will not necessarily have to wear masks, but in places where close encounters cannot be avoided it is possible that we will require people to wear masks outside. “Capak said.
About Testing Tourists
“This began as initiative so that tourists who have to have a test when returning to their home country can take it in Croatia. Primorsko-Goranska County organized testing on Cres and Lošinj. We are talking to tourist boards to enable testing elsewhere, and it may extend the season,” said Capak on N1.
“We used the R0 factor occasionally when there was interest in it. There are other indicators, like the number of new cases. It jumped and is now 1.74 for the last four days. We also use prediction models that tell us whether will the numbers will fall.”
“Exponential growth means you’ve added a coefficient to a number, and 2 is the lowest you can use. We still don’t have exponential growth,” Capak claims.
About 50 Foreign Infected Tourists in Croatia
“We have communicated with the Austrians in several ways: mainly through our embassy. As for Slovenia, I am in very close contact with their public health institute. Croatia will not go red until it reaches 40 infected per 100,000 for a 14 day period.
We have a slightly larger number of tourists who are infected here — about 50 of them. They are staying here, but we will have more accurate information throughout the day. “

8:33 – Professor Kolarić, Head of the public health service and epidemiologist for the government’s Scientific Council on COVID-19, was a guest on N1. “Certainly we are not happy with the numbers. We have all relaxed a little (regarding safety measures). In general we have an increase, fortunately the new cases are all young people who experience milder symptoms. We do not have an exponential case increase yet, but the number of new infections warns us that we must do something to reduce that growth,” he explained.
I was skeptical about opening nightclubs because it’s hard to prevent contact in those spaces. I believe that these shortening of working hours will bring a slightly smaller number.
It is not just an issue of people being in close contact but it is a matter of whether or not they have COVID-19. If people are in close contact at 1 meter for more than 15 minutes it can be dangerous. If people didn’t wear masks in churches, we’ll see (the results) in the next week or two — and whether there will be more infected people.”
“It is important to reduce the number of newly infected. Currently the higher number of infected people does not affect us as much because mostly young people are infected,” he added.
“The average age is now around 30, in April it was over 50. We know that age is the one factor which most affects the severity of symptoms. I think the primary reason that there are currently few patients with severe symptoms is that mostly young people have become infected. We we still don’t know how much this disease has an impact on health in the long run and that’s why we don’t need to consider any kind of mass infection.
Certainly, some kind of immunity develops when a person becomes infected, but we do not know how long that protection lasts,” Kolarić explained.
In places where we cannot keep an appropriate distance outside, we recommend wearing masks, said Kolarić.
I will not predict what will happen in schools. Anything is possible with or without masks, it all depends on the situation, he commented regarding the upcoming school year.
“In the fall, we will have the problem of parallel COVID-19 and flu infections, and sometimes it will be difficult to differentiate the two. We plan to obtain more doses of the flu vaccine this year compared to previous years,” said Kolarić.
7:40 – Croatia has been on the list of high-risk countries for Austria since midnight.
Therefore, all travelers from Croatia, and Austrians, returning from vacations from Croatia must show a negative PCR test for COVID-19, which must be done within the last 72 hours, or they must go into a ten-day home self-isolation and be tested within 48 hours after entering the country. No test is required for transit through the country.
